black bars

Well, i'm new to iMovie and wanted to make a movie, or rather edit a short move, made by iPhone.

I cropped the movie en exported. This came out great. Then I tried again but now black bars came in. This wasn't the first time, but i have no clue how i did it :-) Anyone here that can help me and tell me how i got that done?

That's what I am telling you. The You Tube movie is shot in an aspect ratio more like 16:3 rather than iMovie's fixed screen aspect ratio of 16:9. So you get black bars to make it fit the screen.

Here's what the movie looks like in iMovie with the "Fit" setting that preserves the original aspect ratio, but with black bars:

Here's what the movie looks like in iMovie with the Crop to Fill setting that is zoomed to fill the screen with no black bars:

If you want, you can overlay the movie as a cutaway onto a different color background to change the color of the black bars:

Something must have gone awry in the cropping process. Try importing into iMovie without doing any cropping and see what happens.

Also, in iMovie you can use the Crop to Fill setting to adjust the clip to fit the screen. It would result in zooming in, however.

Here's a link to the online Help menu that will explain cropping:

Hi Rich,

so, the thing is that it’s impossible to create it withouten the black bars, I know that :). I found it impossible to do it again.

i just hoped Someone Could tell how I than managed to do it once. Because that’s what I keep saying :). I did it once, without knowing how I got it done.

so that means i’ll just have to keep trying and make the same ‘mistake’ again to get the job done.

I know :) and I understand. But how come i got a situation other than what you mention on the youtube movie. No black bars and the, as you estimate, 16:3 ratio. If i insert the movie without (and no zoom!) in WP, i get the video as a 16:3 ratio.

okay. I got the right one for my site. But now I would like to add a video, taken in portrait mode on iPhone. And I want to show it without the ugly bars left and right.

How can i get that?

As I explained, the black bars are caused because the movie is in a smaller aspect ratio than the iMovie screen that is a fixed aspect ratio that cannot be changed. If you play the movie in other than iMovie, such as on your desktop or in the photos app, there will be no black bars.

I don't know of any way to display a video taken in portrait mode in iMovie without having the black bars, unless you Crop to Fill and thus zoom in. What you can do is overlay the video onto a more pleasant background that will replace the black bars.
