I keep getting messages from what I assume is a fake account posing as apple support telling me my stolen phone has been activated with a new sim card and prompting me to sign in and track it. I am assuming this is a scam but wanted to be sure apple would not contact me this way?

The way to track the phone is by using Find My Phone, not by signing into a link in a text message. I would be very suspicious. Try going to iCloud.com/Find My Phone using a computer browser to see if you can track the phone.

Your best option is to contact Apple Support regarding the legitimacy of this text message. If your phone genuinely was stolen, this could be a real text message. If the text contains a link, is it for apple.com?
