Creating an admin account in Single User Mode

  1. Boot into Single User Mode. Restart and hold down the ⌘ + S keys.
  2. Mount the drive by typing /sbin/mount -uw / then ↩ enter.
  3. Remove the Apple Setup Done file by typing rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone then ↩ enter.
  4. Reboot by typing reboot then ↩ enter.

What all this does is remove the hidden file, .AppleSetupDone. When you restart, the Mac will think no one has ever used this computer before and go through the initial setup sequence. At which time, you'll be able to create a new admin account.
