Strange case of logd process crashing every 10 - 15 minutes

My late 2013 iMac has a strange problem, the logd process is crashing frequently, causing my system to lock up every 10 minutes or so (it just crashed again as I type this very sentence).

I've tried a range of things already, running disk utilities in recovery mode (disk is apparently fine), running the mac hardware diagnostic check (no problems found), running memtest (memory is apparently fine), resetting SMC and PRAM, starting in safe mode, creating a new user account, running the Mojave combo update, disabling Spotlight, uninstalling all manner of apps - none of these things have helped, the logd process continues to crash.

It appears to crash as soon as the computer boots (judging from the time stamps on the error logs) and then continues to crash again once every 10 minutes or so while I'm using the computer, it seems to crash less often if the computer is not being used.

I was hoping someone might have some insights into what could possibly be causing this problem and / or what I could do to fix it. Apart from the crashing process the computer is running really nicely, just locks up every 10 minutes for about 30 seconds, which is becoming very aggravating and inconvenient.

I've included my most recent EtreCheck report and the most recent logd crash log entry below.

This problem seemed to begin around the time I upgraded to Mojave, but I'm not 100% sure it's related to the upgrade.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

OK, I did the OS reinstall from the Recovery, didn't work - I stil have the logd crashes. Started crashing again once every 10 minutes or so as soon the installation was complete.

Would doing a complete clean install of everything help do you think? Wipe the hard disk, re-install OS and restore from backup?

Yes a clean install would be an excellent test of your hardware. Testing for the fault.

Restoring from a backup would re-introduce any possible conflicts in your configuration, again testing.

Ok - I have fixed this problem by going into recovery mode, erasing the hard drive and then re-installing the OS. I haven't restored from backup as that'd probably reintroduce the problem. I'm now just copying across the files I need from my backup drive and re-installing all required apps.

I dunno what cause this problem, but it seemed to start around the time I upgraded to Mojave - possibly related to incomplete / incorrect conversion to APFS (I have an iMac with a fusion drive).

Thanks for your help Leroy :)

Yeh there’s a few, I pick on it because it’s crashing constantly the others are one off crashes. Also I uninstalled those apps to see if it changed anything, it didn’t.

Ive been keeping the activity monitor and console open for days to see what happens when the system locks up, every single time it coincides with a logd crash.

As I mentioned in my original post I’ve booted into Safe mode and tried using another user account, neither resolved the problem, still constant logd crashes.

Thanks Leroy.

I'm gonna try to get through work this week with the constant freezing and then try to a clean install next weekend.

Is it best to do the clean install using Recovery and erasing the drive in Disk Utility then reinstalling the OS or is it better to use a bootable USB installer or are they both basically the same?

I'm thinking I'll do some testing on the clean install then try restoring some files I need (not system files), then doing fresh installs of all the apps I need (not restoring them from the backup but re-downloading fresh installs). Hopefully that way if the problem is resolved with the clean install it won't be reintroduced as I add back files / apps I need.

I don't know if you'll be able to make any sense of this, but I've added the few seconds before the crash from the system.log file - I know this says the libdispatch is crashing, but the crash log for the logd crash says it crashed at the exact same time, so maybe logd is failing as a result of the libdispatch problem...

There are A LOT of entries referring to a bug in libdispatch in the system log, I don't know if that significant or not.

I'd love to hear you thoughts

You have quit a few crashes—why pick on /logd ? Because it was first in the list?

Some things I see possibly suspect, the safeboot maybe telling

Steam

Homebrew

Amphetamine

Adobe Creative Cloud

Have you tried to To trouble shoot further :

Try a SafeBoot  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-10 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches, dynamic loader cache, etc. get cleared and rebuilt.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

Test issue in another user (or guest user) account  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

The parent process of logd of coarse is launchd part of the Kernal_task

I am a bit surprise you have had no Kernal panics to report.

These could be found in the Finder>Go>Go To Folder, copy and paste:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

with panic in the file name—this would be more telling to post 3 or 4 of those reports.

If I had to take a WAG I might suspect hardware ie RAM, or HD If the problem persist in Safeboot mode.

Thanks Leroy,

Yeh I also suspected HD or memory issues, but I've run multiple scans on both and they report they're fine. I ran Disk Utility in recovery mode several times and I've run memtest and the built-in hardware diagnostics - all find no errors.

I had a look in the log/DiagnosticReports folder for for kernel panic logs, didn't find any - just heaps of logd crash logs, quite a few shutdownStall logs, some .userspace_watchdog_timeout.spin logs and quite a few .awd files :(

From Recovery (command R) you can reinstall the macOS on top of your existing macOS, this would leave the user file/data untouched but refresh the macOS. That would be painless and cover another base.

Recovery  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

always advised to have a current backup plan in place.

I have seen reports of this exact issue back in 10.13 with no clear resolve, and the ASC ticket was locked.
