macbook air-periods and double spaces

My macbook air-the new 2018 version, keeps putting in periods and double/triple spaces. I have to constantly go back and edit everything. Driving me nuts. Is there a way to fix this? I've gotten to the point where I hardly use it anymore. Too frustrating. Note, I'm on an old imac right now, like it much better, but not portable! Any help or suggestions is much appreciated. Thank you.
