Macbook Pro won't awake from sleep

I have a Macbook Pro (Retina 15-in Early 2013, 2.4 GHz Core i7 *GB Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB) that will not awake (has a black screen with absolutlely nothing on it) once I close the lid or put to sleep--even if I shut down and restart. The keyboard lights work. I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC.

The only way I can get the screen to come on at all is to let the battery drain to 0%, then once I hit the power button and the "charge battery" screen comes on, I plug in the battery charger really quickly and it awakes to normal screen function.

Once I get the screen running with this method, the OS (Mojave 10.14.4) and all programs and wifi work fine and quickly. Thanks.

MacBook Pro 15", macOS 10.14

Something is quite unusual here—If the SMC is not working for you as you describe above by following the exact instructions for your exact machine—please not this is considered a non removal battery.

resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

You can try running the Diagnostic/AHT http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

However In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

Not sure if this is the same problem but mine often refuses to wake from sleep- coming up with a grey screen which requires me to restart computer.I did everything that I found recommended, including a clean reinstall. Nothing worked. But I have discovered a work around which might work for you. Turn on the Develop line in Safari and then Empty Caches once a day or every other day. Not idea why this works but it has for me. And as soon as I forget to do it- back to the grey screen. Hope this works for you- a lot easier than emptying the battery.
