Graphics card to run Mojave on Mac Pro 5,1

I have a Mac Pro 5,1 running macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra). I purchased a Metal-capable Radeon 7850 graphics card in order to upgrade to macOS 10.14 (Mojave). When I installed the card and started the machine, it showed the boot screen and then went black. As the HDD is partitioned, I then booted into the partition running OS 10.12 (Sierra) and everything was perfect.

I decided to delete the file "AMD7000Controller.kext" from the System>Library>Extensions folder in OS 10.13 and replace it with the identical file from OS 10.12. The machine now booted up fine in OS 10.13 but there were a few quirks, like a flashing black square behind the cursor and the machine refusing to go to sleep. These quirks went away when I re-installed the old graphics card (AMD Radeon 5770).

Are there some other files in OS 10.13 that can be replaced with files from OS 10.12 so that the Radeon 7850 graphics card will work? If not, I will exchange the 7850 for a 7950 that Apple says is Mojave-compatible. Has anyone had experience with the Radeon 7950 or any other card that Apple lists as Mojave-compatible?

Yess... i bought a sapphire mac version radeon 7950 way way back when... and it works fine... but for installing sierra, high sierra and mojave, the switch on the card has to be in the other position( yes, there’s a 2 position switch on the card) otherwise it will not boot and won’t install sierra, high sierra or mojave. You will see nothing on the screen at all. About the only other choice might be the nvidia 680?? As for replacing files to get your 7850 working, try xlr8yourmac.com or tonymacx86.com for some rough ideas. Usually a pc grafix card may work in a mac pro— with the following conditions: you will not see a boot screen until the grafix drivers have been loaded. So if you need that for troubleshooting, u r out of luck. A pc grafix card may be flashed to work on mac, but this costs money. The 7950 new is around $ 300. Way way back when, i paid about $740 with shipping. That card is old by now but it still works. Talk to someone else, i have no real idea on which files to replace to get the 7850 working legit. Maybe someone else has already figured it out or fixed it so it does work.

Thanks for the information. The 7850 had been flashed so I did see the boot screen; it was after the boot screen that the display went dark. I returned that card to the guy who sold it to me and will probably try a 7970 next, because Apple's list says it should definitely work. I considered the nvidia GeForce GTX 680 which is also on Apple's list. One post on MacRumors says it works with Mojave, but nvidia says they are still waiting for Apple to approve their Mojave drivers. So what to believe?
