After searching Apple's site on getting my iPad air 2 battery replaced they said the battery would cost $99. Digging down into the site I then discovered the charges would be $299. to replace it. They must pay their tech staff quite a bit for their services!
Anyone care to offer their thoughts?

The out of warranty battery replacement, IF Apple Stores determine you have a failing battery issue and NOT other hardware/software problems is $99 U.S.D., plus tax.
Apple Stores do not repair iPads, nor replace batteries, but should offer you a refurbished iPad as a replacement, in lieu of the actual battery replacement.
This policy, it seems, is carried out on a store by store basis and by region and location basis.
Some regions of the world will actually send your iPad out to get a $99, plus tax, new battery installed.
To expedite quicker customer service, Apple Stores in other regions of the world may offer you a refurbished, replacement iPad for the cost of the $99 battery replacement.
You won't know the outcome until you take you iPad into an Apple Store for diagnosis and evaluation.

Thoughts on what? We are all other users here and do not work for Apple. Hence, we do not know the corporate policy on staff salaries. Out of warranty repairs are quite often replacements. So, the best thing is to take it to an Apple store and ask them.

Sorry for my being 'metaphorical' in my post about salaries but was trying to grasp the large discrepancies in prices quoted and prices charged. Hence, my request for 'thoughts'. Being the official Apple forum I 'thought' I might glean a reply from someone on the inside. This may be a false assumption.
Living in a rural setting where Apple stores are not available I did my search on their website. I also inquired about this with Best Buy, which is within my travel only to find that they cannot service battery replacements.

No, this is a user to user forum, no official Apple support or “insider” knowledge. And, please, do avoid bestbuy, I would not trust them with any of my Macs.
