Disconnecting an old device from my apple ID

I sold my iPhone 7 to someone who apparently can't get into the phone without my Apple ID password, even though i reset the phone and have removed this device from my apple ID list, is there any way I can fix this problem without having to get the phone back and log back into my Apple ID?
