Display won't sleep after locking

Hi all,

So I'm having an issue with my display not sleeping after locking. Normally, when I tap the lock button on the touch bar, the screen will lock and then a few seconds later the display will turn off but the computer will stay running (so browser downloads, etc. continue running). Suddenly, I went to tap the lock button when I got up and the computer locked, but the display stays on now and won't shut off unless I tap the "cancel" button or hit the escape key on the lock screen. I have restarted several times, both normally and in safe mode. I have not installed anything since the last time it was working normally (just a few hours ago). I reset the NVRAM and the SMC hoping it was a glitch, but to no avail. The screen no longer sleeps after locking. I have checked all settings and they have been the same with no change for months.

Thanks in advance for your help!

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.14

You do not say what exact Mac /model /year /size /retina /touchbar is this ?

or

what exact macOS you are running?

and what about the keyboard short cut: control command Q

does this work as expected? throws up a lock screen, and sleeps with a second or two if no action

there are other options:

http://osxdaily.com/2011/01/17/lock-screen-mac/

You can from the Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app refresh the touchbar and contro;l strip—

Refreshing Touch Bar from the Terminal command line, copy & paste:

    sudo pkill TouchBarServer

Refresh the Control Strip in Touch Bar, copy & paste:

    killall ControlStrip

Apologies,

I have a 2016 MacBook Pro, 13-inch with Touch Bar (MacBookPro13,2). 8GB RAM, 2.9GHz i5.
Running macOS Mojave 10.14.4.

I tried restarting the services as you suggested, but the issue has not been fixed. I don't think the issue lies in the touch bar.
Even using the keyboard shortcut or going to the Apple menu and clicking lock screen, the screen stays lit after locking, and fails to sleep after a few seconds. This was working normally and suddenly it won't sleep. As I said before, no settings have been changed and no software has been installed. I've tried booting into safe mode which also didn't fix the issue. Something is preventing it from sleeping, I just don't know what it could possibly be.
Activity monitor's energy tab shows no processes preventing sleep.

One short of reinstalling your macOS from the Recovery (command R)

I would suggest —

Download macOS Mojave 10.14.4 Combo Update - Apple Support https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1996?locale=pt_BR

on top of your existing macOS— all user data/files remain untouched.

and see if this sorts the anomaly.

To trouble shoot further you can:

  Try a SafeBoot  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-10 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache,  etc. Login and test —then reboot as normal and test

This will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

Test issue in another user (or guest user) account  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

So I got ahold of AppleCare, and after trying every possible thing we could think of, the representative tried locking his own Mac that he had at his workstation. Turns out, his display didn't shut off after locking either! So we've made the conclusion that some under-the-hood automatic firmware upgrade must have changed the way the SMC handles power, as the behavior seems to have changed on other systems as well. Thank you for your help!

Suit yourself, you are running out of options.

Wait it out for the next macOS 10.14.5 update to see if it sorts it out or

take it for a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

Make an appointment for a "hardware issue"—this will get you past all the support question on software.

I downloaded and ran the combo update, but unfortunately the screen still fails to sleep after locking.

As stated in the post that is quoted at the top of your reply, I have already tried a safe boot, but it didn't fix the issue.

I also tried adding a new user account and testing the lock with that account, no difference.

I will emphasize again that nothing changed on the system between when it was working and when it stopped working. This should not require a full reinstall of macOS to fix.
