"Liking" a message in group text creates a new message

I'm in a group text in which 7 people use iPhones and 3 do not (I am one of the 7 on iPhone). When an iPhone user "likes" or "loves" one of the messages, it creates a new text that literally states: [Person] Liked "[Message]" instead of just showing the icon next to the message. I used to be on Android and that's how it was doing it, but now that I'm on iOS I don't understand why it's still doing that. Any ideas or help?

iPhone XS, iOS 12

This article answered my question, thanks. My understanding now is that, since there are non-iOS users on the thread, then everyone sees the literal message as opposed to the icon expression (thumbs-up, heart, etc.).
