I'm in a group chat with iPhone and android users. When someone "likes" a message, it repeats the whole message instead of just putting the thumb there. My friends iPhone does it just fine. Why?

Since this is a mixed group message, you will see that appear, because the Android devices cannot handle Tapback, which is what you use in iMessage to put the thumbs up, or heart, etc. Those will only appear in a group iMessage or single iMessage.
