iMovie import error

iMac running 10.14.4, using iMovie 10.1.1, and trying to import video from a Canon HF M41 video camera. This configuration before Mojave & previous has worked flawlessly. Now I get import failures:

"Import Failed. The following clip encountered an error during import: Clip name: Clip #310.mov

Device: Canon

Event: 2019 may"

Not just that clip either; many.

I tried again using a different USB wire, a newer one. Failed.

I tried connecting directly into the iMac/, not hub. Failed.

I ran Disk Utility & tried again. Failed.

I ran an fsck -y maintenance & zapped the P-ram, and restarted. Failed.

Can someone help, please?

iMac 21.5", macOS 10.14

Hi,

You didn't give the full name of the video camera, but there is no HF M41 listed on Apple's website of iMovie supported

cameras. That might be the issue, although being unlisted doesn't necessarily mean that the camera won't work with iMovie. However, as the operating systems keep upgrading, sometimes cameras that previously were supported become unsupported for various reasons. Here's the link to the supported cameras website so you can check it out for yourself in case I missed spotting your camera:

When you said you are running iMovie 10.1.1 I assume that you meant 10.1.11, the current version. If not, update to the current version.

If it were just a typo in describing your iMovie version, then try opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if you can import.

In case it is a library issue, you can try opening iMovie in a new library. You can do that by holding down the Option key as you open iMovie, and selecting a different or new library in the box that appears. See if the import will complete properly in the new library.

If still no luck, try using the Image Capture app on your Mac to import to your desktop rather than directly into iMovie. From your desktop you can drag the movies into iMovie. Another way is to import into the Photos app (actually, that is the recommended way), and from there you can access your clips from the Photos item in the side bar of an open iMovie project.

Although you replaced your wire, it might be that your USB socket is defective. Try using a different socket on your Mac and see if it makes a difference. You definitely do not want to use a hub. Also, you can try importing from the SD card instead of the camera itself.

You said that the problem happens with many clips. Does that mean that some clips do import properly? While it is not likely that many clips would have corruption, while some do not, it is possible. Corruption can be a cause of import failures. In what format are the failing clips being shot, and is the format different from the ones that are failing? Is it possible that your camera is malfunctioning in some way, causing corruption in a clip?

Also, check to see that you have sufficient space on your hard drive to allow completion of the import. It takes about 4 GB for iMovie to operate reliably, plus you need about 20GB or so to receive your video, depending on its file size.

Rich839,

I’d tho’t that my post was thorough & complete, but after reading yours I see that it was not. Thank you for taking time to write a detailed prognosis.

I didn’t write the complete model name of the vid camera cuz it had been working smoothly w/ this & the previous iMacs. Also I went to the camera‘s model URL, which detected my OS, and claimed that the OS I’m running likely includes appropriate drivers.

I believe I’ve found the culprit: it’s probably the SD card. When I plug in the camera to the iMac & open iMovie’s import window I see rows of little clips in the bottom pane. 3/4 of the way down is what it looks like: each clip having a thin, grey stripe running across its bottom (see attachment).

Those I found out I can easily, naturally import. It’s the ones after that that fail w/ the same error message 100% of the time; however, I can still see the preview vidoe running in the above preview window. Moreover, when I hook up the video to the TV we can easily watch those clips.

When I put that SD card into the Fuji X-M1 camera & plug it in to the iMac, open iMovie it mounts in the import window side panel, but no preview at all. The same goes for Image Capture.

I haven’t tried iPhoto yet. You can download video to iPhoto? News to me.

Same problem. Same systems. Cannot upload to Youtube and will not save a file. I can do it 100 times it doesnt matter. I have signed in to youtube to make sure over and over again. Doesnt matter. Working on this for days on end. No fix in sight. I have never had a problem with Mac prior to this. I have never had a problem with Imovie and now it just will not work no matter what I do. Why have a Mac if it acts like a piece of poo PC?
