Apple Mail recently stopped receiving Gmail

In past month or so, I've had trouble getting my Gmail on Apple Mail. This has never happened before. This has been set up and working for about 1 year on this Mac, so I don't understand why it stop working. I'm having trouble on the MacBookPro. However, I can get the iPad to receive mail, and sometimes I can force the MBP to receive mail too, by first downloading it on iPad, then opening Apple Mail on MBP.

I was getting warning saying "Login failed", so I finally reset the password on the MBP. Well, I don't get that message anymore, however I am getting a popup message that says "Online Status Connections to the server "map.gmail.com" on the default ports timed out" and two buttons to Cancel or Try Again. I understand the message and realize that gmail doesn't use the default port. But there doesn't appear any way on the MBP to see what port it's using, without starting all over. I'm leery to do this since I don't store my emails on gmail, I move them to folders on the MBP, and I don't want to lose these messages.

Can anyone tell me how to fix the port problem without regenerating the gmail account on Apple Mail from scratch?

[Next day] At this point my gmail has become completely disfunctional unless I log in directly on website. My Apple mail no longer receives NOR sends email out. I think I have no options, than to set it back up again. Since all of my saved emails are on my MBP (NOT on gmail), can I just add another gmail account into Apple Mail (even though it's really the SAME ONE) and enter the correct data for my current gmail address and set it up a second time? What are my options? How do I get out of this mess WITHOUT losing the email folders that are already on my MBP?

Thanks for any assistance.

Diana

My wife and I made two calls to Apple yesterday, in hopes of fixing the following issues with our MacBook Pro computers:

*Mail - Very similar to those described in this thread

*Safari - Google was established as the default search engine, yet all searches returned Yahoo results. We also experienced serious latency and even a lack of response when performing Internet searches (cache was cleared and flushed several times)

*Mac OS Mojave OS 10.14.5 - Failed download

The first representative was unable to resolve our issues and suggested that we simply use our iPhones until "they" (either Apple or Google/Yahoo) address the email issue. We also made several changes to our System Preferences that yielded no results. Thankfully, the second Apple support specialist that we spoke with was able to address all of our issues on both computers.

We were advised to go to https://www.malwarebytes.com and download the free version of their software to remove malware. After downloading and running scans, we were able to quarantine and delete quite a bit of excess baggage. The removal of malware fixed ALL of our problems and our computers are both working as expected again!

I would not have downloaded free software from an external site had we not been directed to do so by an Apple representative, but it was recommended that we run malware scans every few weeks with the free version of the Malwarebytes software. This may or may not fix your Mail issues but the suggestion to download a free and Apple-trusted malware program was not found in any of my online troubleshooting searches and wasn't suggested by the first Apple support specialist that we spoke with yesterday.

Good luck - I hope that you are able to resolve your Apple Mail issues soon.

Hopefully it said "imap.gmail.com" and not "map.gmail.com" but if it was the latter then there’s your problem!

First backup your mac preferably using Time Machine. Just in case.

”On my Mac mailboxes should not get deleted when you remove and then re-add the Gmail account. This should reset the imap server glitch.

If they are lost you can, whilst Mail is being displayed on screen, enter Time Machine then get them restored.

I have never tried any other backup and restore as TM is brilliant.

Using “On My Mac” folders suggests you might enjoy more security from the internet companies, but you do need a rigorous backup regime. Google keeps all your emails even if you delete them.

Well, it's now been a month, and....the problem is still with me. I tried speaking to an Apple person on chat, but that person didn't appear to understand my problem. I then scheduled a Genius Bar and took my MacBookPro into an Apple store. Well, the guy did get the settings to work while we were there. However, after I got home, I found that the problem was still with me and hasn't been fixed.

The workaround that seems to work is to download the emails onto my iPad (which has worked continuously). Then exit out of Mail (sometimes reboot) on iPad. Exit out of Mail (sometimes reboot) on MBP. If I then say some magic words, it SOMETIMES works and gmail downloads onto MBP. This is not consistent. I noted "reboot". That seems to work more consistently, but why all of a sudden do I have to reboot all computers to make them work (this NEVER HAPPENED on MacOS prior to Mojave). While this workaround generally will work, it's only good for a few minutes to an hour, after which I have to repeat the process. Complicated? YES, you betcha. I still haven't identified what precisely it is complaining about.

On a side note, I notice that I have to reboot both MBP and iPad in order to get Favorite photos from MBP onto Photos on the iPad. Afterwhich I can then unFavorite the photo and it stays on my iPad. The general answer is that photos taken/imported onto my MBP don't show up on the iPad. So much for iCloud being the all-in-all fix to sharing photos on all devices (1 MPB, 1 iMac, 2 iPads, 1 iPhone, plus HomePod Plus AirPort). Somewhere along the line, I am having difficulty SHARING from one device/Mac to another....

Will the problem get worse or fixed with Catalina? Who knows?

Tried Gmail app or another app like Airmail?

you don’t have to use Apple Mail on Mac even tho you use iPad Mail app.

You would need to move your on my mac folders back to the online accounts. Google already secretly keeps your stuff even tho you thought you moved them offline so there’s no real point in on my mac in my opinion.

Personally I dumped Google entirely.

Well, I downloaded Malwarebytes and let it do its business... and waited a few days to be sure it REALLY is fixed this time. Well, I've been able to use Gmail normally for 3 days now, with NO hiccups, so I think it is safe to say it's now fixed. I'm still concerned that Malwarebytes might be preventing another of my programs from operating correctly (CleanMyMac). Other than that, it is performed admirably. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
