MLB AtBat app crashes on Apple TV 4

I had a call from a "technical manager" at MLB who was genuinely concerned and asked a lot of good questions. I had kept a log of crashes during a Mets game of duration between crashes and circumstances at the time of the crash and went over it with him. We checked to make sure I had the latest version of the app (v 5.2.0 (5809)), which I did. He said it probably had something to do with the tvOS 12.3 roll out that the app could not deal with. With the information I gave him he was going to go back to the developers so that they had some "data" to work with. Yes, they have a problem and they are working on it. We exchanged phone numbers and agreed to stay in touch if there are any new developments.

As a side note, I told him it would be nice if he informed their Level 1 & 2 folks to inform callers that, yes, they have an issue and are working on it instead of making us all go through the delete-unplug-install (repeat as necessary) routine.

There is a new update out in the last few hours: v5.3.2 (5857). Not sure what it fixes, but hopefully there is something in there for us that fixes this problem! Please try it out and report if it fixes the issues for you.

Try changing the Apple TV sleep settings. I had my device sleep setting at 15 minutes. Changed to 1 hour. So far so good, nearly an hour and it has not shut itself off.

They are giving you the runaround, they developed the app and would be responsible for any issues associated with said app. It has nothing to do with Apple. You will need to persist with MLB and encourage others to do the same.

Sadly this remains a huge problem. Many people have reported this problem on a Reddit thread, but MLB has been useless at actually giving instructions relevant to AppleTV 4K. It looks like the latest update introduced a bunch of bugs. Here's the Reddit link for anyone looking for information:

MLB app has crashed 8 times (so far) on game I'm watching today on Apple TV. I immediately send a DM to @MLBFanSupport on Twitter every time it does. I don't know if that will have any effect, but if enough angry fans do it maybe they'll get sick of it and actually do something to fix it instead of sending canned responses.

I have my Apple TV 4 set to auto update apps. The app had updated itself when I turned it on and I streamed an entire recorded game from yesterday, commercials and all, with no crashes. We'll see what happens tonight with a live stream.

I totally understand and unfortunately that kind of stuff happens a lot more than it should. The best way to accomplish that is to encourage more people to continually contact them until they realize that this is a serious issue, especially if a lot of users start threatening to cancel.

We've lost a number of functions, but for us it started around end of May. (4k, OS12.3)

Have contacted MLB but are dealing with form responses (even though we've told them we've already done all the items suggested on their trouble shooting page....which they just sent us back to twice. 🙄)

Here's what we've lost:

• Inability to "Start from the beginning" of a game. Always jumps to LIVE.
• NO PAUSE function at all - not live, not on delay, and not even while watching archived games.
• Loss of skip function on the iPhone remote app (ONLY when using MLB app, the back 10/forward 10 buttons are missing.)

And starting last night, 6/6, you can add:

• MULTIPLE crashes - no matter if you start from app or start from AppleTV app/showcase (which shows the scores. 👎)
• Constant loss of "hide scores" function (we have hiding ON, but all night it kept switching back to show scores.)

This WAS the first year it actually seemed stable...but here we go again!!!! Don't know what we're paying for!? 😖

With the new app out, you might give this another try:

To fix the hide scores:

1. Log onto a computer and choose a game at- https://www.mlb.com/live-stream-games

2. Once the game begins, locate settings in the top right.

3. From the Settings of the Web player, set the spoilers to the chosen position and return to the game then close the media player.

4. Force close all apps on the Apple TV - https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-close-apps-on-apple-tv-4173833 

5. Reaunch the At Bat app on the Apple TV and the spoiler setting should now be corrected.

The spoilers setting or hide scores is controlled by the web player settings.

Every user having the issue needs to be contacting MLB and demanding something be done.

Almost watched the entire Cards/Mets game (live) without crashing with latest update. Looks promising.

Good thought, but support is impenetrable. They keep sending stock responses for problems that aren't even asked about. Like, here are instructions for WiFi (I use Ethernet) or restart your iPhone (this is an AppleTV). How to get through to upper level tech support I'm not sure.

I get that. So you don't need to continue spending so much of your time on this, but if you know others that are experiencing this then encourage all of them to do so as well as on places like reddit. Hopefully it does get resolved, best of luck.
