Why doesn't portrait mode on the iPhone XR work on pets?

The iPhone XR has portrait mode, but when I try to use it on my dog, it says "no person detected" and won't work. I know this works on the 7+ and 8+ so it seems ridiculous that it won't work on the newer XR. I know there's an app that will do it for you, but I shouldn't have to buy an app for a capability that older phones have.

If you take a closer look, iPhone 7 Plus and 8 Plus do have a second lens that is required for sensing the depth.

iPhone XR has only one lens and it's using machine learning to create portrait shots of people. And it's not capable of talking portrait shots of anything else.

iPhone XR was never advertised like it could take portraits of dogs, cats, food, etc.
