Earphones break

My headphones work perfectly fine if they are plugged in during the initial startup. However, if they are unplugged at any audio will only play through the laptop speaker, regardless of if the headphones are plugged back in. The only way to get audio back into the headphones is to restart the application.

Clearly my headphone jack isn't completely broken seeing as the audio can work normally for a brief period once a new driver is installed. The problem is that it never lasts as eventually I have to restart my laptop/put it to sleep.

Any thoughts? I'm sick of having to completely restart the application when I accidentally unplug my headphones in the middle of a show/movie.

Hello chacrica,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that headphones connected to your MacBook Pro stop working once they are unplugged and plugged back in, until you restart the application you're listening to sound in. You've come to the right place for help.

The next time this occurs, I would like to have you check your Sound preferences to see what options appear in the sound output settings when you reconnect the headphones:

Adjust your computer’s sound output settings - Mac Help

If your headphones appear, do you hear sound again after you select the headphones as an output device without restarting the app? If the headphones aren't detected, reset your NVRAM, then see if you can replicate the behavior:

Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

If there's no change after trying those steps, some additional questions that would be helpful to answer are:

What app is this happening in?

If you have a different pair of headphones you can connect to your Mac, does the same issue occur with different headphones?

Cheers!
