Inaudible call volume after updating iPhone 8 to 12.2

I've used my iPhone for a couple of years without difficulty hearing those who call me. Within the last several weeks I've had difficulty hearing the caller if I don't switch the phone over to its external speaker. The external speaker works just fine. The internal speaker volume, even when the volume indicator is at maximum, is so low that I have difficulty hearing. I've researched this problem and it seems to exist in the last several generations of iPhones and in subsequent generations, as well. Although I can't be certain of the cause, the only change to my iPhone is the software update, so I deduce that the update caused the problem. The phone held to my ear and speaking to and hearing the caller is the main function of the device, even though it's a mini-computer. Obviously, I've researched the topic and tried the suggestions that are posted with other users who have experienced this problem. Is there a different or newer solution that works?

Make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple. Also, see How to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or Distributor (AAD).

My visit to the Genius Bar gave me insight into Apple's billion dollar profits. My $700 iPhone 8 is out of its warranty period by six months and, surprise, the inaudible volume of the internal phone speaker is not a software problem, but it is a hardware problem. Please forgive me if I seem a tad skeptical. The phone receiver is damaged, the Genius told me, after a quick digital diagnostic scan of my phone. It can be easily replaced for $150. Wouldn't I rather just go ahead and purchase a new iPhone instead of spending $150 on a nearly three year old phone? Of course, the phone can be repaired and the repair includes a new phone face and receiver if I would rather do that. Honestly, I'm now motivated to begin researching Android phones. It may be that an iPhone remains my option, but I will never view Apple with the same trust as before. And, I will use the external speakers and text messaging for communications until I'm ready for a new set.
