user name is not home directory

so i can log into my mac book pro but when i go to groups and i want to change something on advanced option, it asks me to enter my username and password. i am sure i am entering the password correctly because i can log into my mac but somehow the user name seems to be wrong. its not my home directory name obviously because i tried with caps on and off but did not work. i recently change something on advanced option in groups which is most probably causing this problem. any shortcut to know what is my user name. i can't make any changes on my mac due to this username problem. i tried whoami on terminal but the username is again, not correct

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.13

No, it is correct, but that may not be what you expect.

If you incorrectly change the short user name using the Advanced… options in Users & Groups, you can cause all sorts of havoc in the account.

The proper way to change the name (or anything in Advanced…) is to do it from another admin-capable account. If you make the changes while logged into the same account you are changing, you will remove the capability to administrate the computer from that account. Changing the name won't change the home folder name. You must change that separately, again using a different admin account.

If you have removed the ability to administrate the Mac from that account, and you don't have another admin account to use to fix the problems, you will need to create a new admin account using the Setup Assistant: https://www.lifewire.com/create-new-admin-account-for-login-issues-2259976

From that account, you can fix the problems in the other account, if you can figure out what you did.

Here are the instructions for changing an account name. Note that you must be logged out of the account you are changing.
