Cannot type userID when resetting MAC Book Pro

I have acquired a MACBook. Need to set it back to new. Command R brings up restore. Keyboard works fine in terminal and will enter password. However, I cannot enter the username. Regardless of what I type in AppleID, nothing happens. (If I hit TAB, it does move the cursor over) I am a MACBook novice. Do not have the userID/password for the previous user. (They don't remember it)

Never a good line to hear when you are buying a used Mac...this should be your first clue there is an issue.

Psswd is never echoed on screen, type it in anyway

What you do not say is what exact Mac is this

If there is firmware password set, it may well prevent you from going further

newer Macs with T2 chip have a Startup Security to prevent against unauthorized access

Might be worth review how a Mac is properly prepared before resale/ and or buying in your case

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac ...

It could be without the cooperation of the previous owner you may have bought a 'boat anchor.'

The issue is that when typing in the user ID, the cursor never moves and the keyboard does not appear to be responsive. Typing in the password enters in the blinding dots as expected.

Also, when attempting to connect to wireless, I am unable to type in the wireless passwords. I got around that issue by hardwiring the network connection.

Internet Recovery requires a Wi-Fi network with a WPA or WPA2 password.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)

How would I tell if there is a firmware password?
I haven't bought it yet......sale is pending my being able to accomplish a reset.

Makes no difference if you can not access wifi, and have no user ID and psswd from pervious owner, a firmware passed would be one more psswd you do not have— you hands are tied.

There are many places that sell used Macs that typically come with a warranty— minus the headaches:
