Bluetooth on MacBook Pro can't discover any devices nor be discovered, but can still use AirDrop

I have a MacBook Pro (13", purchased in 2013), running 10.14.4 Mojave. When I open Bluetooth from System Preferences on my Mac, I can't find any devices. On my iPhone, I cannot detect my Mac on the list of Bluetooth devices in the vicinity. However, I can still send files back and forth between the two via AirDrop.

I've tried deleting com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and rebooting, multiple times, to no avail. I've also tried resetting the Mac's Bluetooth module.

Currently, a mysterious "e4-e4-ab-6e-0f-80" item appears under the list of devices in the Mac's Bluetooth menu - it's not possible to connect to it.

Please help!!

to connect a bluetooth speaker to a device it has not been connected to before require

  1. the speaker does not have a current active connection with another device its already been paired with
  2. the speaker is placed into pairing / discovery mode so ramdon neigbords and prankters dont pair and play pranks
