iMac running very slow following installation of audio plugins. 5-10 second Beachball and lag for nearly all processes consistently.

Hey guys,

First time post here so apologies for any mistakes. Just let me know what further information you need.

So a few days ago I installed some audio plugins (Arturia V Collection and some freebies) to add to my increasing collection of plugins on Pro Tools 11. Since installing them I have experienced a significant drop in performance in all aspects of my computer. Even the simplest tasks of opening a Finder window or opening System Preferences is accompanied by a 5-10 second lag and beachball. Everything seems to be running 10x slower and startup is incredibly slow and most of the time won't even start unless I first start in Safe mode and restart from there. You'll see from the Etrecheck report below that the performance is Below Average but there were no Major Problems found.

Pro Tools has also suffered significantly. Crashing frequently and lagging on even the simplest tasks. These plugins are generally quite CPU intensive and that's something I expect when using them in Pro Tools but this seems to be happening even without the plugins being used in the session.

I looked to Activity Monitor to see if there were any obvious culprits and thought the 'spindump' process might have been slowing things down. I followed the process here (https://www.macobserver.com/tips/how-to/disable-tailspind-spindump-macos-cpu-speed/) to disable spindump and tailspin in the hopes that it would solve the slowness but unfortunately it hasn't made a difference.

I've tried to quit applications running in the background like Dropbox and Splice (removing login items too) and have cleaned up my Desktop and Downloads but nothing seems to be making any dent in the slowness.

There are two solutions that I'm expecting to hear. (Please note I would still like advice regarding both of these solutions but thought I'd give you my reasons for avoiding these so far)

  1. Uninstall and reinstall the plugins. I'm hoping to avoid this as I'm currently using the plugins daily with a client and would like to avoid the hassle of redoing the presets and setting up the plugins for them again. I also don't know what mistakes I made with the first installation and I don't know what to change with reinstallation so would like advice before embarking on this process. And who doesn't want a quick fix rather than reinstalling half a dozen plugins!
  2. Update iOS to High Sierra or Mojave. Updating operating systems wrecks havoc on my plugins as some of them aren't supported so it's not really an option here unfortunately. (You can see the 32 bit apps found in Etrecheck)

I've contacted Arturia and am waiting to hear back from them too. But I honestly have more faith in this community than I do in them to solve the problem as most of the suggestions I've found from them online are to do with CPU usage within the DAW as the plugins are running rather than the performance of the entire system.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Yep all of them are working with Sierra. I’ve considered updating to High Sierra but I don’t really understand the compatibility issues and am afraid of stuffing up all my plugins.

And I’ve uninstalled CleanMyMac and removed every login item. Still no improvement I’m afraid. I had to startup again in safe mode to get the computer to restart too as it froze when I attempted the first restart.

Thanks for the response Bob. I’ll go through and do some further cleaning like you mentioned. I have accumulated a lot of unnecessary files over the last year so this could help a lot.

And thank you for the advice on interleaved memory. I never knew this was a thing so I will definitely look into buying an additional 16GB card to take advantage of this. I’ve always been a bit disappointed with the performance of my computer running Pro Tools so anything I can do to improve performance is great.

Thanks again. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Remove CleanMyMac. Too many other users have suffered from performance issues using this software.

Then go through the EtreCheck report and do some house cleaning. If you no longer use it, remove it. If you are not sure, make sure you know how to get it back, and then remove it to see if you miss it. cruft accumulated over the years can have its own impact on your system.

Finally, this is just some advice going forward. Get another 16GB DIMM and put it into the Bank0/DIMM1 slot. This would NOT solve your performance issues, but equal sized pairs in opposites memory banks allows the Mac to use Interleaved memory. Interleaving memory tends to improve overall performance by 10 to 15%. Again, this is NOT your problem, and a 10% performance improvement will NOT make your beachballs go away. It is just a way to squeeze the most out of your Mac.

Why Interleaved memory. Current RAM technology requires 2 memory cycles to access data. The first cycle drains the capacitive charge from the memory location to read its value (lets says this is the DIMM in Bank 0). The 2nd cycle is re-writing the value back into the now all empty memory location. During the re-write cycle, the DIMM cannot be used.

Interleaved memory means if the program is accessing memory in a sequential manor, then the next memory access can come from Bank 1, and since Bank 1 is not doing a re-write, it is ready to read immediately. So while Bank 0 is doing its re-write, Bank 1 can be read. And while Bank 1 is doing its re-write, Bank 0 is again ready to read. So sequential memory access can proceed at 1 memory cycle per memory access.

The reason you only get 10-15% is because A) not all memory access is sequential, and B) CPUs run way faster than RAM, and depends on 1st and 2nd level very fast caches and sometimes 3rd level caches to provide faster memory access closer to the CPU. And I do mean closer because in 1 nanosecond an electrical signal can only travel about 1 foot (30.48cm). And nothing in a computer travels in a straight line, so the further the DIMM are from the CPU the more delay in accessing DIMM memory, so a memory cache is positioned much closer to the CPU. Generally the 1st level (and some of the 2nd level caches) are located on the CPU chip itself.

Again, Interleaved memory does not have anything to do with your beachballs, so just consider this something to address in the future when you can afford to by another 16GB DIMM.
