renamed an appleTV, but homekit will not let me use the name

  1. I had an AppleTV 4th Gen named "Basement"
  2. I then decided that I wanted to create a new room in homekit named basement, so I could add all of my lights
  3. I renamed the AppleTV from "Basement" to "Basement AppleTV"
  4. When I try to add the new room called "Basement", homeKit says that that name is already in use
  5. For now, the basement is named "Basemen", but it's really awkward telling Siri to turn off the "Basemen" lights.
  6. It's been well over a year and I still cannot use the word "Basement" in HomeKit

Is there any way to release the name "Basement"? (I have 3 x 4th Gen ATVs that I assume contain the configuration?)

BTW - under topics, there is nowhere to select HomeKit

thanks

To make your life easier get the app Home Controller, you can use it to backup your homekit configuration.

However I doubt deleting your setup will solve this, I had a similar issue but with scene names and completely deleted my home and made one with a different name, it made no difference.

Edit: I just checked in the Home Controller app, and was able to delete my old scene (that was not visible in the stock Homekit app) with the conflicting name. Problem solved! I bet your conflicting room is listed there.

Hello lazlo_hollyfeld,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. I understand it is not letting you use 'Basement' as a name for HomeKit since it was previously used by an Apple TV.

Here are some suggestions that can help:

1. Rename the Apple TV to something else completely temporarily. Try changing the name for the room or accessory again.

2. How to restart your Apple TV - Apple Support

3. Remove the room after changing the Apple TV's name and add it again: Set up and use the Home app - Apple Support

Thanks and have a great day.

lazlo_hollyfeld,

Thanks for trying those steps and providing the additional information about your Apple TV.

Try removing the home and accessory altogether and starting fresh using these steps from the link we provided under Delete your home or remove accessories: Set up and use the Home app - Apple Support

If you're still having issues after starting fresh, reach out to the Apple Support team using this link here: Contact Apple Support

Thanks and have a great weekend.
