Trouble with transitions in iMovie.

I am using the cross dissolve transition in iMovie. I use the precision editor. Half the time it works beautifully. However, other times the transition throws in extra frames from clips that are not being used. I go back into transition editor to correct the problem. All looks good there, but when I play the transition again in the movie, the problem of extra frames from other clips (sometimes deleted clips) is still there.

What is going on and how do I fix this?

I'd skip using the Precision Editor. No need for it, really. Just drag the cross-dissolve transition to a point in between the clips in the timeline. Or, if you want to do it the easy way, select a number of clips in a row and do an Edit/Add Cross Dissolve.

Thanks Rich! I restarted the computer and iMovie, but it did not seem to change my transition problem. I did copy and paste to a new movie. Here, I have another problem that I don't quite understand. My old movie (A) was a short clip derived from a longer movie (B), that I was making into a movie onto itself. When I copied and pasted the short movie (A) into a new movie (C), I lost short movie A and got long movie B. I lost all edits that I had previously made on A. But.... when adding a new transition to this new movie C, it did work. But will it work if I repeat all the editing with A that I had done before?

Hope reading this isn't as confusing as I feel right now, haha.

Precision editor is all screwed up. Was able to copy just the short movie with all edits, but transition problem is the same. Precision editor keeps moving frames and won’t allow me to line up. When I turn off to preview what I have, I find that It is all jumbled up. I think I need more help than I can find in texting. But thanks.

Hi, stellarsue,

It might be a corrupt preference that is causing the transitions to malfunction. Try restarting your computer and opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if the transitions work properly.

Also, it could be that the problem is confined to just one project. You can test by doing an Edit/Select All, Edit/Copy, of the media in your project and then do an Edit/Paste the media into a newly created project. Or, you can test in a new project with different media.

Also, make sure that your iMovie app and operating system are updated to the latest versions. That would be iMovie 10.1.11 and Mojave. 10.14.4.

Hi,

You have confirmed that the problem is confined to one specific project. That is good because it shows that iMovie otherwise works fine in other projects.

If you followed my instructions exactly, the media that you copied to the new project should have carried all of your edits with it. Try again and see if it works correctly. In the old project do an Edit/Select All, then Edit/Copy. Open a newly created project. In the new project do an Edit/Paste. All of your media should copy over with the edits intact.
