Mac is not connecting to my iCloud

I had to change my Apple ID yesterday. Today when I started my computer I was directed to enter my Apple ID password to open iCloud. I did so with the new Apple ID password but all that is happening (for the last three hours or so) is the spinning circle. I can minimize that screen and still use my computer but I cannot open my iCloud preferences.

Have you tried going to System Preferences/iCloud and signing out, then back in?
