Mac mini on Target mode to iMac screen black

Yesterday I bought a Mac mini as a way to speed up life. They said I could use my iMac 2012 display through Target Display mode and the right Thunderbolt 3 to Thunder 2 + mini display adapter. I bought all that and when I hit Command - F2 the iMac screen just goes black??? When I hit it again it comes back just fine on my iMac cpu again? The Mac mini displays fine on a TV I a using just to set it all up.

Thoughts?

You need a Thunderbolt cable to go between the Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter

and the iMac. The 2012 iMac is Thunderbolt, not minidisplay port cable/adapter.
