Connecting MacBook Air to two different, external monitors

Hello,

I have a MacBook air and was looking to connect it to two, external monitors so that I could be working two different screens at one time. I currently have it set-up, and can see the same image on both screens, but don't want them mirrored. I have mirroring turned off, and looked up how to set this up and it said to go into Displays then the "arrangement" tab, but I don't have that as an option in Displays. Any help is very much appreciated!

disconnect 1 display then open the display control panel. I’m guessing you’ll see it and be able to set up the internal and the one external separately. But since the displays are HDMI that you won’t be able to use both.

Do you have the proper cable to connect the external display directly to the computer?

in regard to 2 displays...Apple specs for the 2012 thru 2017 specify 2 display support for Thunderbolt displays. Your displays aren’t thunderbolt.

What model MBA? If you aren't sure click on the Apple menu and select the About this Mac option. The splash screen will tell you what year. Also what kind of interface do your displays use?

Thanks for your reply and help? It says it's a 13-inch, early 2014.

I got a mini display port to dual HDMI adapter and plugged both HDMI chords from the screens to the adapter, then into my mini display port. As I mentioned I am getting it to show up on both screens, but hoping to use the screens separately. Thanks again!

You're super helpful, thank you! I don't have thunderbolt port with this Macbook Air, just the mini display port. I wonder if I plug on in the mini display port via an hdmi adapter then one through a USB if that would let me operate the displays separately?

I disconnected, but still was not able to see "arrangement" in my Displays. You think I won't be able to see two different screens on my external monitors because it's an older MacBook?
