So I am trying to find the folder "my folder" The problem is the below finds it but also finds other folders that contain "my folder"
mdfind "kind:folder my folder"
Result:
/Volumes/ExternalHD/my folder
/Volumes/ExternalHD/Back up of my folder
/Volumes/ExternalHD/Back up of my folder2
As you can see it finds all occurrences to it. Can you specify an exact match?

You cannot use the Spotlight syntax with mdfind. Rather use this:
mdfind -onlyin ~ "kMDItemKind == 'Folder' && kMDItemFSName == 'my folder'"
This returns a single folder "my folder" on my Desktop. If you do not want the search constrained to your home directory, then omit the -onlyin ~ from the command.
Have you tried:
mdfind -name "my folder" "kind:folder"
That gives the same output.
It gives all folders that contain the name "my folder"
that didn't return anything in terminal.

I test before I post, and even when I copied/pasted what I posted above into Terminal, it worked correctly.
Try the "-literal" query; it works here.
mdfind , find an exact match, nothing more nothing less
