My iPhone 8 videos import to iMovie just fine...but as a single photo. Won't play as a video. A little flash window appears that tells me "Video is exported as an image. Export to disk to retain video file". I have NO idea what that means, because I'm exporting it from my photos into the iMovie! I have changed the setting in my phone to the "Most Compatible" one and did a test...still doesn't work.

He had me click on "Photos" in iMovie...then when "My Albums " appeared I went over to "All my Albums", and presto, there they all were, from 2012 to 2019! Had to do LOTS of scrolling to find 2019 though! From there, I just double clicked and everything in the album smoothly went into iMovie, including my iPhone videos! So easy it is almost embarrassing that I needed help!

You can drag any correctly formatted video into iMovie from your desk top. You cannot drag a video directly from the Photos app into iMovie.
I would be interested in what "correct way" that the tech person showed you.

If the videos are playing as videos on your external drive, then all you need to do is drag them into iMovie. They should play as videos there.

Rich, thank you for responding...but the video is already ON my computer, residing in my external hard drive along with all my vids and pics.
Yes, that's the recommended way to do it. I hadn't realized that you had the photos in the Photos app.

Just got off the phone with a tech...apparently "dragging and dropping" the videos from my PHOTOS app didn't allow for the videos to play. He showed me the CORRECT way to access my albums, which allowed the videos to work perfectly. I LOVE Apple tech support! Thank you, Rich, for taking the time to help.

The message is telling you to export the video from your iPhone to your desktop, rather than directly into iMovie, and from there you can drag it into iMovie.
