Mojave doesn't stop external drives from spinning after eject.

Hello there.

Mojave doesn't stop external drives from spinning and powering down after eject. This will ware out drives faster, and cause potential data loss. I've experienced this on iMac 5k and also iMac Pro, so i'm thinking it's software.

Never had a problem with High Sierra.

Any ideas?

First of all, after the Mac has gone to sleep, when I wake it up, I find that drives have ejected and I get the warning message that it was not properly ejected, but it also has reconnected, so it's just a bunch of warnings. This mainly happens with my Time Machine drive, which is a Lacie USB 3 drive, but it has happened with other connected drives, including an SSD. The other issue is that when I access the Finder or go to a save dialogue, the HDD drive needs to spin up, so I get the beachball for about 10 seconds. I have "do not allow hard drives to sleep" selected in preferences, but that doesn't seem to matter. It really slows things down as I have to wait for the beachball multiple times as I work. As I say, this is all new since using my Mac Studio. I am running Monterey 12.6.1. Does anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it? Is it a Monterey thing? An Apple Silicon thing?

Mojave - Disk not ejected properly When I close the lid on my Mac Pro 2015, and I reopen when I want to start working again, my Mac,(Mac Pro 2015), often comes back with the message, external drive not ejected properly. This has only happened since I upgraded to Mojave. Any thoughts? This is particularly as I use an internal Nifty drive. C

iMac external drive continually spinning down I recently purchased a New iMac (M1 chip 2021) running Big Sur. I have two external drives connected to it. These external drives are the drives I primarily work off of due to storage limitations of the internal hard drive. The problem I'm having is that the drives continually spin down when connected - basically after 1-2 minutes of "inactivity". This makes it impossible to work on programs like After Effects or Adobe Audition without having to stop and wait for the drives to spin up every 1-2 minutes. This is not a case of the drives going to sleep after an hour of inactivity - it happens within minutes - even while working in the programs. I went into the Preferences pane and unchecked "put hard disk to sleep when possible" option and I also checked "prevent hard disks from sleeping automatically when the display is off." Also this was not an issue with the previous computer a 2013 MacPro desktop. Has anyone else had this issue? Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing which will keep the drives spinning for longer? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Spinning the disk up and down wears it out faster than leaving it running. Anyway, I believe this has been fixed in the 10.14.5 Mojave update as my external HDD now spins down and powers off again.
