Photo exporting error/Seagate backup permissions

Hi. Can someone please please PLEASE help me.

I recently upgrade (3 days ago) my iMac desktop to Mojave.

I am busy sorting my photos and I want to export them to my external hard drive (Seagate Backup Plus Drive) but I am getting the following error.

I had a look at the permissions on my Seagate Backup and it has contradictory permissions:

It states I have only read permissions but under my (or rather my husband's name: wersteyn) the permission is read &write. When I unlock the lock and try to change the permission settings but I unable to as it still states that I do not have permission to do so. See screenshots below...

I read the discussions similar to this but I do not have the "ignore permissions" tick box as can be seen in the screenshots above.

Prior to upgrading to Mojave, I was able to use this backup hard drive to export all my photos. I made a backup of my computer on another external hard drive (WD My passport ultra). The Seagate hard drive is purely for photos and videos of my children, husband and family members.

Please can you please help me!

Kind regards

Ola

Yes. If an option, you can do so through use of Disk Utility, on your Mac(Not your PC). In all, I recommend taking it in for service.

Do not use Disk Utility if you are unfamiliar with and/or not proficient in disk maintenance. Instead, stop here, and take it in for service.

Taking it in for service:

Use an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) or your Local Apple Store, (where you would need to setup a Genius Bar Appointment prior to having this maintenance performed).

Using Disk Utility

Opening Disk Utility:

  • Go To: Applications > Utilities > Open: Disk Utility.

or...

  • Use Spotlight: hold-down Command & press Spacebar and then type Disk Utility.

Using Disk Utility:

Formatting the Disk is High-End stuff, as Disk Failure is probable. Henceforth, backup all the data, as everything would be lost.

Through Use of Disk Utility, it all comes down to: Mounting > Erasing > Formatting (use APFS for format type) > Un-Mounting > Verifying > & then Using the Disk.

In all, I recommend taking it in for service.

Transferring these Files

You Can Either:

A. Manually Transfer these Files:

  1. Plug this Hard Drive into a Windows PC
  2. To save data, upload these Files to an External Source (i.e. Windows' Desktop Folder; Server; Cloud Storage; or eMail a few at a time)
  3. Download them to your Mac.

or...

B. Use an External Hard Drive that is Formatted as PC and Apple Compatible. All files would be accessible and readable by both device types: Apple and Windows. Look on the product's packaging to verify that the drive comes pre-formatted as Apple and Windows compatible. Copy and paste these files to the new hard drive from the current one, and you should be all set, accessing them on your Apple and Windows PC.

Hi Eric. Thank you for responding so quickly. We only have one account/log in on our iMac desktop. My husband’s account so I log in under his name and his password. The same why that I have always been doing.

I noted that in previous discussions, there was talk of Time Machine and that it should be switched off. I switched it off. I also unplugged my Seagate backup plus and restarted the iMac but I am having the same exporting errors.

The File System of your Hard Drive is NTFS (Windows-Only). Your Apple Hard Drive uses APFS (or other). So, being Windows-only formatted, that is the reason you are seeing this error message.

-----

For a faster data transmission rate (reading and writing), use a Hard Drive that is of SSD (Solid State Drive) type and not HDD (Hard Disk Drive) type. SSD has no moving past, and is less pro to failure.

-----

In all, due to ease of use, transferring this date though use of an external SSD hard drive that is formatted as Apple and Windows compatible, seems the best way to go.
