2 step authentication

You know, I don't work for the CIA. Why Apple insists on this 2 step authentication to do anything is beyond me! All I wanted to do just now was add another phone number that I can be verified through and I just gave up. First the code that was sent to me didn't work. So I tried again and this time it never sent any code at all. And there is no way to turn off the authentication process.

I just returned to iphone from Android and am now second guessing myself.

This authentication process is infuriating. There really is nothing that I have access to in my Apple profile or otherwise that warrant it.

Does anyone have any clue as to how to turn this off?

2 Factor Authentication

From the article below. If it has been on longer than 2 weeks, you can't turn it off.

Can I turn off two-factor authentication after I’ve turned it on?

If you already use two-factor authentication, you can no longer turn it off. Certain features in the latest versions of iOS and macOS require this extra level of security, which is designed to protect your information. If you recently updated your account, however, you can unenroll for a period of two weeks. Just open your enrollment confirmation email and click the link to return to your previous security settings. Keep in mind, this makes your account less secure and means that you can't use features that require a higher level of security.
