How do I safely eject an SD card from an old iMac 27"?
If you open Finder and if you have the side-bar showing you can click the Eject button next to the SD Card in the "Locations" sections.
If you don't have the side-bar showing you can click the Finder-menu, select Preferences, and click the sidebar icon to select to show Locations:
You can also run the Disk Utility app and eject it from there.

Thanks! The Disk Utility app solved the problem.
I couldn't quite understand the Side Bar thing. I found it in Preferences, but all it did was list Devices, Favorites and so on. I don't see any actual Side Bar showing and couldn't find any Finder commands to turn it on.
You can also just drag the SD card icon to the trash can - that will eject it as well.
