Why no setting to allow calls only from numbers in my contacts?

Just manually enable do not disturb and leave it on. Then in the DND settings, only allow calls from your contacts or a specified group in your contacts. If needed, you just need turn DND off again to receive all calls.

Well for one that would be severely limiting in the modern world.
Besides the" Do Not Disturb" mentioned above, You can block calls—

They still come through to the display, but the notification sounds are muted. There currently is no way to alter that aspect of DND.
Will I still get notifications from burglar alarms and other wanted notifications?
Not helpful.
Probably will never see it...would also block political calls!!
Thanks for the suggestions...should be easier than work-arounds affecting lots of other things.
