I dropped my phone and the screen cracked into a million pieces. The battery is also bulging out now. I took it to be fixed and they said it may be a manufacturers fault with the battery and should take it to apple first. Could this be true?

You could make an appointment with an AASP or ARS for them to inspect, but with the cracked screen, it will most likely be out of warranty.
How old is the iPhone? I have heard of old batteries swelling or expanding.

Be prepared to pay for the screen replacement; there's no guarantee that will be covered. If they determine the battery caused the damage, then it may not cost you.
