Macbook pro has 2.4 ghz connectivity issues

In the pas two weeks, my mid 2012 MacBook Pro has encountered a series of problems with 2.4ghz networks. I have to be within about 3 feet of them to connect. Anything further and it just dies. I can connect to 5ghz with no problem, but of course there are range issues. This has taken place on different routers in different locations. I live in a rural home with no other networks within sight, so it is not interference.

I know people have solved this problem by removing USB 3.0 devices, but right now I have none plugged in.

I am due for a new laptop anyways, so that will probably ultimately fix it, but till then - any ideas?

Look also at this snapshot available by holding the Option key while clicking on the Wi-Fi Icon in the menubar.

if the numbers for RSSI do not improve to better (closer to zero) than -50 dB when your Mac is placed within 3 feet of a Router, you likely have a disconnected or broken antenna wire. In older models, the wires pass through the hinge area to actual antennas in the display-surround.

For more info, if I literally hold the laptop next to a router and do a speedtest, i get near 50Mbps download, 20 upload. I move 3 meters away and it is less than 1 download and the test fails on the upload.

Again, this happens with multiple routers, so it is my macbook pro. And other devices onthese networks are not having problem. This includes phones, ipads and other macbook pros.
