Running 12.3. iPhone is only about 1 month old but in the last week or so (including when running 12.2) when I turn off Do Not Disturb, any messages or calls do not give any sound / ring. Notifications are all on and volume is at half so doesn't appear to be the usual solutions. Restarting *mostly* but not always resolves it. But this seems to happen often but not always. Any ideas or solutions appreciated! Thanks!

OK so I tried most things to no avail - all sounds had stopped working for notifications and calls (but sound was working otherwise).
Found this page - https://www.ikream.com/2019/05/how-to-fix-apple-iphone-xr-notifications-that-are-not-working-troubleshooting-guide-30441 - and followed step 1 and did a force restart. This seemed to work... if it helps anyone else.
Think this may have to go into the apple store under AppleCare in case anyone else has this issue - this has now happened several more times, randomly, aagh! I did wonder if it was to do with a tight fitting waterproof case I sometimes put it in. But it's doing it anyway again. Restarting and force restart no longer helping...
Edit - rebooting hasn't worked this time, no ring, no notification sounds!
