My AirPods won’t pause when I take one off

My AirPods won’t pause when I take one off. I have tried on my Bluetooth and do the forget this device but it doesn’t pause.

Forget them again, put the AirPods in the case, leave the lid open and push the button on the back until the light starts blinking. Then pair them again.
