Portrait mode

Why does the iphone 8 not have portrait mode? Xr doesn’t have dual camera and has it. Why can’t there be an update and put it on the phone?

Portrait mode is generated on the iPhone Xr via the new graphics co-processor, and it is less functional than Portrait mode in iPhones with dual true depth cameras. It works, but is much more limited.

The hardware on the iPhone 8 is simply not capable if making a functional attempt at Portrait mode. Apple could certainly try to enable it, but results would likely be mediocre at best.
