cannot uninstall Apple Software Update, having exceeded available technical help....any ideas ????

Hi,

I've spent over half a day stuck at trying to uninstall Apple Software Update at the sequence point of recommended removal of iTunes components, per this post, which is excellent and encyclopedic,

but just is not working.

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6562

Note 1#

"Some users may find that a particular component such as Apple Mobile Device Support or Apple Application Support will not uninstall or generates a missing .msi error. In such cases try the section Missing MSI errors below, or continue to remove the components that will uninstall, then proceed to the named folder removals. Alternatively try the Microsoft troubleshooter at Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed. Third-party AirPrint support services may also prevent Bonjour from being removed. If so these should be uninstalled first. It may also help to temporarily disable anti-virus software and/or the Windows User Account Control feature (Turn UAC on/off) while repairing software. See also HT3960: iTunes for Windows: Background processes installed on Windows XP, Vista, and 7 (archive copy) for a list of processes that might need to be halted while attempting to uninstall components of iTunes."

The Repair option does not work, it asks for the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi file specific, repeat specific to my version that was installed (2.4.8.1). I've tried a later or earlier version of AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi and the Uninstaller will not accept it.

I tried the alternate Microsoft Troubleshooter, but it removes information from the registry that then the Uninstall feature does not work and the resulting Windows Installer error is:

So then I have to import the removed registry information back into the registry.

I've tried disabling the antivirus software.

The only logical fix that I can see for to get Apple Software Update uninstalled is to get the actual AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi file, version 2.4.8.1, and place it on my PC. I believe that it may be missing due to the antivirus (Avast) having moved it or done something to eliminate it.

Can anyone point me to where I can get the specific 2.4.8.2 version of Apple Software Update?

Windows, Windows 10

Do you recall what build of iTunes you were running before you tried to update? If so you can download a copy of that installer, see the section Install missing components to break it down into .msi files and try to use the ASU ,msi to uninstall it. Alternatively use the other .msi files to install all iTunes components apart from ASU to get iTunes running again.
