Missing files from iMac

Recently I have discovered many files missing. I have restored them using Time Machine. I worry about all the files that may be missing that I haven't tried to open. I recently updated to OS Mojave 10.14.5.

Could there be a connection?

Access to files from macOS Monterey to macOS Big Sur inconsistent I have an iMac running Big Sur 11.7 that I regularly wish to access files on from a MacBook running Monterey 12.6. Here are three folders on the Big Sur iMac that I wish to regularly access: From the MacBook I can see all the files in Pictures and Movies, but can see no files in Documents. It shows a file count of zero. I have no idea what is wrong here. Any suggestions?

Data files/folders greyed out After restoring my new Mac Pro from my time machine (La Cie external hardrive), I can see all of my file folders, but they are greyed out. They only become accessible if I keep my hard drive connected. How do I permanently move my files?

Per chance, did you enable System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Options... > Desktop & Document Folders when you upgraded? If so, then the files in these locations would be moved to your iCloud Drive.
