transitions won't work

Hello! For some reason, I cannot get transitions to work on my FCPX system at home. No matter how many seconds of handles I have, I always get the alert "There is not enough extra media...". And it doesn't matter what type of clip it is-- compound, multi, regular-- I am never able to create a cross dissolve, or any other kind of transition.

Thanks for your help!

FCPX uses your Preferences > Editing > Transition Duration as a guide to determining how to place transitions:

You can set that to less time if you need. In most cases, you can simply click on Create Transition in that dialog box when FCPX complains... Once you do that, FCPX will create the handles itself to fit the transition being applied. If that's too much, then you can click on one side or the other of the Transition in the storyline and adjust its length.

If you cannot, for some reason, allow more frames for a handle on one side or the other, consider using a freeze frame adjusted to the length of (half) the transition, or perhaps, a speed ramp to create more frames.
