I purchased this watch 4 years or so ago. I would like to know what is the average life of such a watch.
I can read in daylight the bottom half of the face, but in digital mode, in relative shade,I have an effort
to tell the time. This sort of fault tells me my watch has reached the end of its life. Am I correct in assuming this or can anything be done to improve the brightness of the screen

I have the same model. No issues as I wear it daily. I would suggest you reset your watch. Press the crown and side button in untill the Apple logo appears. Also Check your Watch is updated to 4.3.2 and your iphone is running ios 12.3.1. Finally Unpair your Watch and repair it. See how you get on.
I had the Original; watch and gave it to my Grandson when I upgraded to the Series 4, and I never had a problem such as you have described. It sounds like your battery might need replacement. Suggest you make an appointment wit the Genius Bar.
