I have just purchased a new MacBook pro and am trying to transfer my files in from my old 2009 MacBook Pro over my wifi. when I try to use Migration assistant my 2009 machine is not connecting to the new machine. I am just getting the "looking for other computers".
I have ticked the file sharing on both and both are on the same wifi.
Do not use Wi-Fi. It will take forever to transfer and probably end in failure anyway. The fastest and easiest way is to connect your Time Machine backup disk directly to your new Mac. If you do not have a TM backup use Ethernet connection.

What macOS is installed on old MacBook Pro?
Make sure that old MacBook Pro is installed Snow Leopard or later.

Hi, Yes I have followed the instructions as per your link above, thanks. The new Mac is picking up the old Mac but the old Mac is not picking up the new one. I have only tried over wifi as I have pretty quick wifi and no thunderbolt connectors yet.
Hi, thanks for responding, the old Mac is running on version 10.11.6. It seems to connect up to my iMac but not the new MacBook.
Thanks, was trying to avoid that as I have not got any new Thunderbolt connectors yet. Maybe a trip to the shops tomorrow!
