If so this is indeed activation lock and nothing to do with an Apple ID being disabled or a passcode. The only way for you to get in is to enter the ID and password used to lock the phone.
The fact that the email address which forms the ID no longer works may not matter since the phone is probably just looking for the text string. For a forgotten password please see

Failing that, and provided you bought the phone new in the first place, take it, the original purchase documents, and some ID to an actual Apple Store (make an appointment) and ask if they can unlock it.
