Imovie picture duration problem

I have previously and successfully used Imovie to create slideshows of stills to music,

I am someway through my most recent project which has a track aligned and photos which I will vary the order and DURATION for each photo to match the music.... however, for an hour I have tried to figure out why certain slides 'refuse' and change back to a default length (NB which isn't a length I have set and is different to each other) - I have tried checking all the setting and it is set at 4 secs... but won't change every time I change the length it just changes back when I click away from the image.

I have also read other forum which suggest transitions is the issue but mine is set to 'off' - there are no transition periods built in, and even so I can't see why it would change back to another length of time. Most are stills (fit) and some are ken burns... please anyone help me fix this? TIA

Hi,

The way to change duration of a photo in the timeline is to select the photo, or a contiguous range of photos, and then click on the little information button (the one that is a circle with an "i" in it, in the toolbar in the upper right of your screen. A duration box will appear. Type in the duration that you want and press the Return key on your keyboard. That will set the duration of the photo or range of photos at the time that you typed in.

If you were trying to change the length by dragging the edge of the photo, it works better if you have expanded your timeline out by moving the little slider handle that is located next to the Settings button located right above the timeline on the right hand side of your screen.

You can go to iMovie/Preferences and set the default photo duration for all photos imported into a project that you have created after setting the preference. The change in the preference setting won't affect projects that were created before the change.

I am unable to replicate your issue on my setup. I am running iMovie 10.1.11 with Mojave. Nothing to do but try a few troubleshooting procedures.

Try opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if you can make a duration change.

Try putting your media into a newly created project and see if it works there.

Make sure that your iMovie version and operating system are updated to current.

Try opening iMovie in a new library (hold down the Option key while opening iMovie and choose another library or create a new library.)

You mention that the issue only occurs with "certain slides". Compare those stills with the ones that work properly and see if you can see anything that accounts for the difference in behavior. You could try saving the troublesome stills in a different format and then reimporting.

Thank you but that is exactly what I have been doing- as I say- never had this issue before. I select each photo and click the ‘i’ button, manually set a new time and then when I press return it shows the new time in the box but once it plays it plays for longer and reverts back to (what appears to be) a randomly selected amount of time as some are showing 1.9 secs and some 4.0 secs etc

min guessing you haven’t had this issue..? I have tried updates/quitting and restarting nothing seems to sort it.
