Hi ebwcarrie,

Thanks so much for using Apple Support Communities. It's great to have you here. If I understand your post correctly, you would like to connect an external monitor to your Mac.

I have two helpful articles called Use external monitors with your Mac and Identify the ports on your Mac that can you double check the requirements and help you determine which port to use with your external display.

I hope you find this information helpful.

Cheers!

I'm using a USB-C to 4K DisplayPort cable to connect my early 2016 12" MacBook to a Samsung 4K monitor (model U28E590D). It works like a charm. I also use that cable to connect the monitor to my 11" iPad Pro with great success.

The cable is from j5create and is listed as part number JCA141. I believe I picked it up from Office Depot or Target.
