Backup

My Mac was backing up fine to an external hard drive until about a month ago. I purchased a new external hard drive and my Mac won't recognize it. How do I get this fixed so I can continue having my Mac backup to the External Hard drive.

external hardrive backup wont complete anymore I want to upgrade macos high sierra 10'13.6 to catalina or big sur but first i need to backup the computer. Backup MacBook Air without USB port? I have a 2019 MacBook Air. I have been needing to back it up to my external, which I believe I did a few months ago, but cannot remember how since this MacBook does not have a USB port. Therefore, I cannot connect my external hard drive. Thanks!

What Format is the new drive, it should be HFS+ Journaled.
