I want to upgrade macos high sierra 10'13.6 to catalina or big sur but first i need to backup the computer. I'm using simple tech prodrive with plenty of storage available. I'm using the usb port. However, the backup stops before it is complete. I've tried many times.
Can anyone help?

Thanks for the help. I finally took the step to fully erase my external hard drive. I was hesitant to have no backup available. This must have given the drive enough room to back up the imac.
Now I'll finally upgrade from High Sierra to Catalina or Big Sur.
