I need to backup an old Mac os 10.5.8. Is there a compatible external hardrive?

Most any drive, just format it HFS+ Journaled.

Don't try to install any software that comes with the drive.

The version of the OS you're running is irrelevant; just use the Time Machine program that comes with your Mac to back up to a connected external drive.
